Lawate Project
Lawate Orphanage Project
Wings of Refuge Founder, and President, Ashley Gray went to Lawate for the first time in March 2010. She, along with Board member Justin Rogers, felt that there was a great need in Lawate for assistance with orphans. Lawate being a small rural village, there are over 200 orphans in the immediate area, with no one to care for them. After meeting with the Lawate church pastor, church elders and the local Community Development official, they were able to secure a building site for the future "Mbawa wa Stara Children's Home". Ashley and Justin met with an engineer, had land surveyed, and now have the building plans drawn up. We hope to break ground by 2011 and are currently looking for church partners who would be interested in participating in the Foundation of Forty.

Lawate School Project
Another need Ashley and Justin encountered in Lawate was at the primary school. Ashley toured the school, which is completely dilapidated, with the engineer. There was never enough funds to properly build the school, so the bricks for the walls were laid, however they were never plastered. The rafters for the roof are wood, as well as flimsy wood frames, with chicken wire stretched over them, for windows. Because the walls were never plastered, the moisture has been seeping in for the last 20 years, creating thick black mold on all the wood. The walls are also beginning to crumble around them, some buildings with holes the size of a basketball. There is also a fourth building which was started, but never finished. It is Wings of Refuge's goal to rehabilitate the three existing buildings and finish the fourth. In return for this project, we were able to secure enrollment for 40 of the orphans in Lawate.

Lawate Sustainable Farm
Wings of Refuge is planning to build a sustainable farm for the orphanage in Lawate. There will be crops, vegetables, fruits and spices, as well as goats and chickens. The food produced on the farm will feed our children at the orphanage, and the excess will be sold at the local market generating funds for the daily needs of the orphans.
